A volunteer always acts under the direction and approval of school staff. An effective volunteer:
- Is familiar with and follows PCE and Martin County School District policies, procedures and guidelines for volunteers
- Arrives on time and only when scheduled to volunteer
- Exhibits a positive and supportive attitude
- Adheres to rules of confidentiality
- Defers to school staff on discipline issues
- Follows the Student Conduct and Discipline Code, as to dress, language and overall behavior
While volunteering is enjoyable, the school is a workplace for school staff and a learning environment for children. Volunteers should be mindful of the need to minimize disruptions by:
- Not entering the classroom unless expected as a volunteer
- Not socializing in the front office
- Turning off cell phones and/or pagers while in the classroom
- Not entering the teachers’ lunchroom
- Not engaging teacher(s) in discussions regarding their own child. Teachers are happy to meet with parents at scheduled conference times or after hour.
