A volunteer always acts under the direction and approval of school staff.  An effective volunteer:

• Is familiar with and follows PCE and Martin County School District policies, procedures and guidelines for volunteers
• Arrives on time and only when scheduled to volunteer
• Exhibits a positive and supportive attitude
• Adheres to rules of confidentiality
• Defers to school staff on discipline issues
• Follows the Student Conduct and Discipline Code, as to dress, language and overall behavior

While volunteering is enjoyable, the school is a workplace for school staff and a learning environment for children.  Volunteers should be mindful of the need to minimize disruptions by:

• Not entering the classroom unless expected as a volunteer
• Not socializing in the front office
• Turning off cell phones and/or pagers while in the classroom
• Not entering the teachers’ lunchroom
• Not engaging teacher(s) in discussions regarding their own child.  Teachers are happy to meet with parents at scheduled conference times or after hour.
