Guidance Counselors

The goal of our guidance program is to meet the needs of all students in a proactive, preventative manner.

Students can see their guidance counselor individually, in small groups, and in classroom presentations. School–wide programs emphasize pro-social skills, conflict resolution, and Character Counts!

This year’s theme is, “CHARACTER UNDER CONSTRUCTION! CAUTION: KIDS AT WORK” We will be using the idea that we are all a “work in progress” to promote our character program. This year we will be spotlighting the following pillars:

September: Self-Respect – Constructing a healthy you.

October: Responsibility – Making good choices and taking the initiative in our own jobs.

November / December: Kindness – Treating all co-workers with respect.

January: Cooperation – All good construction involves great teamwork.

February: Hard Work – It’s okay to SWEAT!

April: Citizenship – Building a GREEN world together.

At the end of each month, teachers will select one student who best exemplifies that pillar and he or she will become the Character Counts Student of the Month for the class. That child will receive a certificate and a ticket to the Character Café. That student will be invited to eat his or her lunch at the Café up on the stage with a parent or a friend from the class and be served a special treat. We hope that this emphasis will prove helpful in developing character in our children.

Guidance also offers a six (6) week guidance support group for children of divorced parents called the "Banana Splits." Self Esteem and Social Skills groups are also offered as needed. In addition, our guidance counselors are always available to offer suggestions to help each student reach his/her personal best.

Screening tests and rating scales to help determine ability, achievement, attention, and activity levels can also be administered with parent permission. The guidance counselors coordinate the Child Study Team, which makes further intervention recommendations to ensure a child’s success in school.

Sometime during the school year, each child in every classroom randomly receives the TLC (Totally Likeable Child) Award. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge that every child is unique, with special interests and accomplishments. Our goal is to accentuate these positive characteristics during a special week. Also, all new students are welcomed to Palm City Elementary by the fifth grade Wildcat Welcomers. Each new student is given a gift package, welcome certificate, and a banner for the class to sign.

Conscious Discipline is a relatively new program being championed by our guidance counselors. The goal of Conscious Discipline, primarily based on current brain research, is to foster the emotional intelligence of teachers first and children second. As a result, it is not a student discipline program as such. However, it does involve teachers and students understanding what the brain requires to be successful in both academic and social situations. The teacher “consciously disciplines” himself/herself in developing commitment and connectedness through routines and rituals. Respect and development of student responsibility is fostered through use of logical consequences.

PCE has a new parenting library that has many of Becky Bailey’s books and resources along with many other authors. Please come by the media center and browse through our new Parent Library. We are proud of our child-centered guidance program and invite you to visit us in person.
